Tentative Professional Development Schedule (Spring 2014)

Below is our "Tentative" schedule for out Tuesday PDs.  Overall, you'll see that UCLA Center X will provide a Common Core professional development once-a-month.  The focus for the rest of the year will be on planning!    If you have any questions please see Mr. Kodani or the person(s) that will be supporting your department.  Bill and Wendy for ELA/ESL, Carlos for Science, Alex for Social Studies and Craig for PE and  Marguerette and Jim for math.

Common Core

If you are still wondering about where we are as a District related to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) please bookmark - ccss.lausd.netto access content periodic assessments, pacing plans and resources.  We will be meeting by departments for the next few weeks to develop our own pacing, CCSS lessons and performance tasks.  We will be asking all departments to compile questions/issues related to the CCSS. 

The “big picture” related to CCSS (across content areas) seems to be focused upon student thinking.  I’m talking about exposing student thinking as a primary task as you build your lessons.  Our students will need much practice “exposing” their thinking based upon evidence.  The primary evidence of their argument, thinking or conclusion will need to be text-driven.  I believe students will be cultivating their literacy skills in English Language Arts and demonstrating there progress in science and social studies.  In the end, it’s more than just “recall” and recitation of information.  Our future PDs will be centered on text, what makes some text worthy of reading and the degree of complexity we are providing for our students.

Kagan Training

A huge shout-out to our staff members that facilitated the Kagan training model during our Nov 12th’s  PD.    As mentioned above, the Kagan strategies are great for “exposing” student thinking.  Remember that graphic of the two pyramids that illustrated (I teach, I model with you, you work with others and finally, you do independently) it’s the “you work with others” that is missing or needed in all lessons.  Kagan will help!  It’s great to have some “go-to” teachers that we can ask for support in this area!  Thanks, Alice, Mayra, Carol, Theresa, Adam, Jazmin and Ana for your support! 

 




Mandatory Posting in Your Classrooms


Hi, Please be sure that you have the following documents posted clearly in your classrooms: Williams/Valenzuela Legislation Attachment A BUL-4759.1,LAUSD Sexual Harassment Policy -Title IX, and the LAUSD nondiscrimination statement. All of these documents were given to you during our PD meeting last Tuesday.

The School Police Department would like to remind all teachers to please lock up ALL your TECH EQUIPMENT before going home for the evening
  • The Los Angeles School Police Department Graveyard Watch receives alarm calls to numerous schools everyday,
  • Most suspects have been apprehended for computer related theft
  • Do not be the next victim
